Today’s show features Part 1 of The Musical – More than Entertainment with Sue Jowell. In this episode Sue introduces us to the musical, from its 18th century beginnings through vaudeville and Gilbert and Sullivan of the nineteenth century. She concludes when the musical makes it to the silver screen in 1928 with The Jazz Singer.
My special guest at 11:00 am is Diane Armstrong, making a welcome return to Arts Wednesday. I think we all look forward to a new novel from Diane and this one is entitled Dancing with the Enemy. It’s set in Jersey, one of the Channel Islands, occupied by the Nazis during World War II and, like her other novels, is a fictionalised version of true events.
Music today is all about the early musicals of the 1920s.
