Tuning in with Lacey May

A new volunteer at East Side FM

I used to wake up my mother at six in the morning to play the drums. In our home, music was always a form of engagement rather than background noise. It was loud in the greatest way possible because my dad plays guitar, my mother plays flute, and many members of my extended family were in bands. Weekends were either spent sitting in theatres, particularly the Capitol Theatre, watching stage and ballet plays or travelling across the state to visit relatives. I can’t recall a moment when I wasn’t dancing, specifically jazz and ballet. Through dance music became a safe space for me as well as outside of dance. I found a way to connect with myself and various cultures and people.

My passion for drumming and the dramatic arts persisted throughout high school. In addition to performing for HSC and receiving nominations for Onstage for both of my drama performances, I continued to pursue my love of the arts through modelling, participating in short films, and working as an extra on show such as Home and Away, which was really awesome. I discovered via these experiences how important narrative is and how connection is made through expression. The creative arts always have felt like home to me. Here at East Side FM I am thrilled to have the opportunity to meet people from all around, explore music and topics that spark interest. As a person that is passionate about films, her faith and the future of the world, I am honoured to be here.

My attention is normally sparked by podcasts, TED Talk lectures, a good book, talk shows, and other media that examine human behaviour and the arts, ranging from neuroscience to culture, to the historical events that influence society. I consider conversation to be an art form, and I find that radio is a private yet open way for connecting through pressure-free and sincere dialogue. Working as a volunteer at EastSide FM has given me the chance to broaden my perspectives, learn how to make room for stories, and become a part of a vibrant, creative community. Currently, I work part-time as a triple zero operator, where I’ve learned to remain calm under pressure, listen deeply, and communicate with clarity. While this role has strengthened my resilience and understanding of human behaviour, my long-term focus remains firmly rooted in the creative arts, performance, and meaningful connection through storytelling.

For now, I’m grateful to be learning and listening at EastSide FM, trusting that the path ahead will continue to shape me as much as I shape it.
