At the end of 2019, one of Sydney’s iconic venues for jazz and new music, 505, closed its doors on Cleveland Street. Listed in Downbeat Magazine as one of the world’s 150 best jazz clubs, 505 had offered live music for six nights a week for a decade. For lovers of improvised music, the good news is that 505 reopens in February in a new venue and with a new format.
It’s actually a reunion – 505 was started by Cameron Undy and Keri Glasscock in 2004 as a performance and music space in the city. A few years later, the music performances moved to the dedicated club in Cleveland Street. The new music presentations by 505 will be back at the 505 theatre space but in its current location at Eliza Street, Newtown.
For a week at the start of each month, 505 will now present five consecutive nights of Acoustic Ritual. The first week of performances opens on February 4th with saxophonist Matt Keegan and drummer and electronic musician Laurence Pike.
Cameron Undy joins Mick Paddon in Time and Space at 2.30pm on Wednesday January 22nd to talk about this new phase in presenting and experiencing live improvised music in Sydney
