Album of the Week: A Free Blowing Wind – The Seven Ups // DEVOTION – Muriel Grossman

A Free Blowing Wind – The Seven Ups

A groovy group from Melbourne, the Seven Ups showcase an incredible album to present for Eastside Radio’s Album of the Week. A Free Blowing Wind takes listeners on an abstruse journey into the lesser known, darker dives of instrumental music, drifting from funk to spiritual jazz and through to psychedelic fuzz rock. The Seven Ups are your soundtrack to the dance floor at the end of the world. A Free Blowing Wind contains tracks that have unique takes on the bands iconic heavy-funk. Listeners are invited to enjoy their spins on the sound that has been evolving on the Melbourne munsic scene over the last 13 years. Within this album the group has also featured for the first time a guest artist, Mindy Meng Wang, on the guozheng which contributes to a diverse, free spirited, melancholy and unique sound.

DEVOTION – Muriel Grossman

Saxophonist and composer Muriel Grossman presents her album Devotion which richly illustrates the word’s meaning. Devotion is a dedicated aural engagement with extremely talented musicians. It reflects a deep spirituality in composition, expression discovery through kaleidoscopic, 21st century jazz. Although it is her debut album, Grossman shows off her amazing sound that takes inspiration transparently, but in practice, is clearly her own original work and sound. Devotion is titled after the creator’s own experience of a natural sense of devotion that arose from her Buddhist meditation practice. With a worthy quartet, this album further showcases the amazing sound that occurs when an ensemble has perfected the collaborative process. Establishing a union, their sound conjoins process of creative inquiry and discovery to deliver transcendence across the universe of music itself.
