‘Holding The Stage: Road Shows Volume 4’ by Sonny Rollins is Eastside Radio’s Album of the Week.
The fourth instalment for this series featuring a living legend of the jazz tradition showcases a culmination of some of his most inspiring live performances to date. The album traverses various performances including his mementos appearance at the Pori Jazz Festival in Finland in 1979, and in Marseille and Prague more recently in 2012. The series, as does the artists entire back catalogue, celebrates an artist of extraordinary talent plucked from Harlem at an early age by the likes of Louis Armstrong and Fats Waller, who become the success his is today.
The tracks themselves delve deeply into the saxophonists artistry highlighting his improvisational skills across tracks such as ‘Don’t Stop the Carnival’ and throughout the eternal standard ‘In A Sentimental Mood’. The album features artists including Bob Crenshaw and Jerome Harris on Bass, Stephen Scott and Mark Soskin on Piano, Clifton Anderson on Trombone and Victor Lewis on Drums just to name a few.
