Albums of the Week: II – Superposition // In My Veins – Jade MacRae

II – Superposition

Released July 19, 2024

Finnish quartet Superposition return with their second album II, released on We Jazz Records. Premiering live at Helsinki’s Odysseus Festival, the band—Olavi Louhivuori on drums, Linda Fredriksson and Adele Sauros on saxophones and Mikael Saastamoinen on bass—pushes their free jazz sound into more melodic and flowing territory. Each member contributes compositions, creating a collective voice that blends introspective, moody passages with fiery, snapping energy.

From the sneaking intensity of the first single “Clouding” to the subdued tension of “Clashes” and the all-out gallop of “Huia”, II showcases a band both intimate and anthemic. Drawing inspiration from acoustic freedom jazz pioneers like Don Cherry and Ornette Coleman, Superposition crafts a narrative-rich sound that makes the album feel like an aural page-turner.
