Our city shines in every season, and now Art & About Sydney allows you to celebrate each one with its ongoing program. After 13 years of a festival-style program that jam-packed one month with temporary public art, the City of Sydney is committing to a yearlong calendar of creativity. Some Art & About favourites will remain, but you can expect more art in every corner of Sydney including major projects, intimate exchanges, and thought-provoking exhibitions.
The City of Sydney seeks Expressions of Interest for Art & About Sydney 2017/18. The curators are looking for big ideas that temporarily transform public and unusual spaces in the City of Sydney Local Government Area. Ideas and proposals from all art disciplines are welcome, including but not limited to visual artists, curators, performers, collectives, filmmakers, musicians, writers, composers, theatre companies, storytellers, producers, choreographers, architects, designers and anyone with a big creative idea. A number of projects will be supported, valued between $10,000 – $85,000. Budgets for the installation/project are to cover all costs for the presentation of the artwork.
This is all about art in unusual place, by artists rethinking and temporarily reshaping city spaces. It can happen anywhere at anytime, and it is for everyone. Seeking for temporary works that demonstrate artistic excellence, innovation, and involve or engage the audience in its development and presentation, the City of Sydney will realise the selected work from July 2017 onwards.
Art & About projects can take place anywhere within the City’s local area, for example, Hyde Park north and south, Martin Place, Pitt Street Mall, Customs House Square, Alfred Street, Wynyard Park, Queens Square, Sydney Square and Sydney Park. You can review maps of the local area and further information on the major parks and venues. The City of Sydney is also happy to work with artists to investigate securing location approvals from private property owners. Other locations can be proposed and discussed with the City if your application is shortlisted.
As Lord Mayor Clover Moore said “Art & About Sydney celebrates our city’s creativity and imagination, with local and international artists bringing their ideas, wit and unique spirit to the spaces we all share. Our creative community, and shared celebrations of this creativity, are fundamental to the identity of our city. The City of Sydney has long recognised the importance of fostering an environment where ideas and imagination can flourish through grants, public art programs and the encouragement of finegrain activity.
All submissions have to be made via the online form HERE. The project will be evaluated according to the creative approach, the use of public space, the experience of the artist and the audience engagement in the project.
