Arts & Culture Festival – Arts Monday

Musicians Mythra Ensemble and Yasmin & Fanous perform live on Arts Monday 6th June 2016. These talented performers are participating in the New Beginnings: Refugee Arts & Culture Festival, which celebrates the talents, skills and cultural diversity of people from refugee backgrounds. Mythra Ensemble’s unique sound is a blend of traditional music of Iran, Armenia, Turkey and Kurdish origin and western styles. Yasmin Ibrahim Mohamed, a singer-songwriter from Sudan, performs African music, blending traditional songs and improvisation with modern styles. Fanous includes Australian and African musicians playing piano/keyboard, bass, guitar, drums, African percussion and vocals.

The Festival line up will feature live music, dance performances and workshops from artists who draw inspiration from the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and Australia. The cultural performers showcase diverse cultural expressions from new and emerging communities with the aim of enriching intercultural understanding and engagement in the broader community.

The New Beginnings Festival 2016 is an initiative of Settlement Services International (SSI), a community-based, not-for-profit humanitarian organisation committed to ensuring that refugees are supported to fulfill their potential as members of the Australian community.
