WHAT’S ON TODAY’S PROGRAM:
Discover the world of women artists who daringly left Australia at a time when few women practiced art, yet alone travelled overseas to develop their artistic skills.
Intrepid Women, an exhibition at the SH Ervin Gallery, presents the work of Australian women artists in Paris from 1900 to 1950.
The exhibition explores the works of over 30 female artists, who were inspired by their visit to Paris – the capital of world art at the time. You will recognise a few household names such Margaret Preston and Stella Bowen – but there are others whose names and works have only recently been remembered through this exhibition.
The Director of the SH Ervin Gallery, Jane Watters, speaks about why these women had to travel abroad to find their voice, the themes of their work and she recounts some of the individual stories which lie behind both the women and their subjects.
The second segment of the program explores whether owning an historic house is a dream come true or a nightmare.
Peter Watts AM, Arts and Heritage Consultant and Emeritus Director of the Historic Houses Trust (now Sydney Living Museums) has been instrumental in developing a conference that focuses on the needs of owners of historic houses.
Intriguingly titled Home Heaven Hell, the conference examines many of the challenges faced by owners of historic houses – from how they address the labyrinth of regulations governing heritage places or meet the challenge of inheriting the old family home.
Home Heaven Hell is the inaugural conference of the Historic Houses Association of Australia – an organisation formed to support the needs of historic house owners.
