ASIAN INTERSECTIONS – BEYOND WORDS

matt-cox

Beyond Words – Calligraphic Traditions of Asia is a long-running exhibition at the Art Gallery of New South Wales.

Join Matt Cox, Curator of Asian Art, in conversation with Maisy Stapleton on Arts Thursday 29 December 2016, about this spiritual and artistic form of communication used across the Asian world.

Calligraphy is found in contexts as varied as parchment, fabric and ceramics, and speaks of the cultural symbolism, beliefs and practices of wide ranging communities.

The exhibition contains some wonderful examples of the art, from a 9th century Qur’an on loan from the Malaysian Islamic Arts Museum to Lindy Lee’s hot metal Cosmos and a digital work for kids by the Iranian artist Parastou Forouhar.
