On the surface, it may not seem like a banjo duo allows for many possibilities. However, when the two artists are Abigail Washburn and Béla Fleck, the possibilities are endless.
Abigail Washburn is a multi-Grammy winning folk artist with the earthy sophistication of a post-modern, old-time singer and songwriter. Béla Fleck is a banjo virtuoso with jazz-to-classical ingenuity and strong bluegrass roots and is an iconic instrumentalist and composer.
Each individually having been credited for revolutionizing the banjo, they come together for a one-of-a-kind pairing. They each lend their unique musical personalities and banjo styles to a diverse repertoire – playing everything from Appalachian murder ballads, to gospel, to chamber and blues.
In 2016, this amazing duo walked away with the Grammy Award for Best Folk Album and have recently begun their very first Australian tour. This show is sure to surprise and delight even those who don’t already have a preference for banjo music.
“In the duo’s hands, their combined total of 10 strings can span the range of a piano, a blues band, or an entire symphony orchestra… If anyone can convince a sceptical world of the beauty of the banjo, it is this pair.” – The Guardian
