The 2023 Bondi Festival launched on a chilly Friday night at the Bondi Pavilion. The iconic ferris wheel and ice rink have returned and 16 days of arts, theatre, cabaret, dance and markets are ready to go.

Waverley Art Prize Winner, Carolyn Craig

After a launch that included a performance of indigenous dance, the Waverley Art Prize Winner was announced. Carolyn Craig is this year’s winner of the $15,000 acquisitive prize for her compelling mixed media work RE/Mediation, My mother’s broom, which explores domestic labour and relationships.

Also the Mayor’s Prize ($2000) went to Damian Dillon for his work, Bloodflowers.

And the newly created Local Prize ($1500), was awarded to Onrie Radovic for Calibration 20.

Nick Phillips: Werewolves

This week we preview two more diverse shows from the Festival. Firstly we speak to Nick Phillips about his interactive murder mystery, Werewolves.

Werewolves are stalking the innocent villagers of Millers Hollow. As each morning breaks, the death toll rises and it’s up to the villagers to try and find the werewolves lurking in plain sight among them. Nick assigns roles to the members of the audience who have to solve the mystery and weed out the foes without hanging their own.

Werewolves runs  Thu 6 – Sat 8 July 5pm, 7:15pm, 9pm
Sun 9 July 3pm, 5pm, 7:15pm

Memphis Mae: CAKE

Also meet the sugar coated, raunchy burlesque performer, Memphis Mae as she previews CAKE.

After the Revolution, the clowns have taken over. We can expect some world-class circus, burlesque, and outrageous queer chaos. CAKE is set to be the messiest party since the Revolution. Maybe some protective wear is in order.

Big frocks or too much exposed flesh? Either way there will be fun, songs, dance and death defying circus acts.

With a cast of 6 outrageous performers, CAKE is serving over four nights.

Thu 6 – Sat 8 July: 8:15pm
Sun 9 July: 6:30pm
