Cécile McLorin Salvant Headlines Sydney Int’l Women’s Jazz Festival

Singular Voices. Bold songwriters. Sublime Acoustics. One night only.

For 12 years, the Sydney Int’l Women’s Jazz Festival has championed groundbreaking artistic innovation, diversity and leading women in jazz.

SIMA’s Artistic Director, Zoe Hauptmann says, “This festival is a testament to the power of women in shaping the world of music. I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to present the future of Australian jazz to Sydney. It’s never background music with SIMA!

Cécile McLorin Salvant

Experience the brilliance of three-time GRAMMY Award-winning vocalist and composer Cécile McLorin Salvant as she graces the stage at City Recital Hall for SIMA’s Sydney International Women’s Jazz Festival and the Singular Voices series.

The nonpareil modern jazz vocalist, Salvant takes the artform to new heights with an unforgettable voice and astonishing interpretive range. Under her spell, stories buried deep in the traditions of jazz, vaudeville, blues and folkloric traditions speak with new life, and burn with a crackling mystery, vulnerability and power.

In the pin-drop atmosphere of the City Recital Hall, she leads a stellar quartet on an odyssey of expression, with music drawn from the critically acclaimed album Ghost Song and her latest release Mélusine. Salvant is joined by the ascendant Sullivan Fortner, described by no less than Brad Mehldau as “quietly revolutionising jazz piano playing. Actually piano playing, period.”

Salvant’s searching emotional intellect tows accolades in its wake – from winning the prestigious Thelonious Monk jazz vocal competition at just 21, to receiving a Macarthur ‘Genius’ Fellowship, and a hat-trick of GRAMMY-winning albums in between – but shows no signs of slowing down. She is at once “her generation’s most imaginative and thrilling jazz interpreter” and an artist that “adheres to no genre”.

Don’t miss this unique opportunity to experience Cécile McLorin Salvant’s incomparable voice live.

“You get a singer like this once in a generation or two.”
