There are so many arts events around town, that Halloween takes a back stage during this Arts Thursday, with Maisy Stapleton.
The only connection with Halloween is some ethereal and out-of-this-world music which accompanies the interviews.
I Kicked A Stone In Metaphor
The intriguing photos of Jens Lichtenberger are showcased in I Kicked A Stone In Metaphor at Sydney’s Gaffa Gallery.
Curated by Lisa Sharkey in collaboration with Jens’ widow Lea Kannar-Lichtenberger, this exhibition is a commemoration of Jens’ creative pursuits after a successful life as a barrister.
Coinciding with the third anniversary of his untimely death, this retrospective introduces the unique way Jens viewed the world through his lens. A book of the same title has also been produced which includes over 200 of his short stories, vignettes, haiku and poems.
An artist in her own right, Lea examines the impact of consumerism and Climate Change on islands and isolated environments. She works across a variety of mediums such as drawing, print media and painting, as well as installations including sound and film, and uses various materials including glass and ceramics.
One of her works was chosen to feature in the current Sculptures by the Sea exhibition being held at Bondi, which runs until November 10.
Join me in conversation with Lea Kannar-Lichtenberger, from 10:30 onwards.
Time and Place is the Sydney Chamber Choir’s forthcoming performance traversing different seasons, eras and locations.
After 11:00 we’re joined by the choir’s Artistic Director Sam Allchurch, who will reveal the vision for this final concert for the year.
Music includes the seasonal cycle The Passing of the Years by Britain’s Jonathon Dove, which was the staring point for Sam’s focus on music evoking time and place. Dove’s song cycle is performed by a double choir, backed by piano virtuoso Luke Byrne.
The choir also explores the work of Paul Stanhope who pays tribute to Oodgeroo Noonuccal in I Have Not Your Dreaming; Australian composer Ella Macens draws on the music of her Latvian heritage and former choir member Clare Maclean takes us, with longing, to her birthplace in A West Irish Ballad.
The performance moves across continents to America with Morten Laurisden and Rene Clausen and to Canada with Healey Willan , finishing with Jonathon Dove’s Invocation and Dance to the poetry of Walt Whitman.
The performance will be staged at the Verbrugghen Hall, Sydney Conservatorium of Music on Sunday 10 November at 3pm.
The choir’s 2020 program will be launched following the program.
