In celebration of 40 years on air since 1983, Eastside Radio is hosting a series of films at The Ritz as part of our 2023 Radio Film Festival.
Every month we’ve chosen a classic film for the big screen where radio plays an important part of the story.
For the month of July we have chosen the cult classic Good Morning Vietnam.
Starring the late and great Robin Williams, the actor portrays Adrian, a disc jockey, who goes to Vietnam to work for the Armed Forces Radio Service. While he becomes popular among the troops, his superiors disapprove of his humour.

For the Month of August we have Chosen Talk Radio.
A rude, contemptuous talk show host becomes overwhelmed by the hatred that surrounds his program just before it goes national.
A poignant film that is still as relevant as ever; in the era of misinformation, attracting viewership through hatred and controversy, Talk Radio still speaks to the ethos of now as it did when it premiered in 1988.

The Month of September brings us our selection Do the Right Thing
Salvatore “Sal” Fragione (Danny Aiello) is the Italian owner of a pizzeria in Brooklyn. A neighbourhood local, Buggin’ Out (Giancarlo Esposito), becomes upset when he sees that the pizzeria’s Wall of Fame exhibits only Italian actors. Buggin’ Out believes a pizzeria in a black neighbourhood should showcase black actors, but Sal disagrees. The wall becomes a symbol of racism and hate to Buggin’ Out and to other people in the neighbourhood, and tensions rise.

Onto October we bring to you Pump Up The Volume.
Mark runs a pirate radio station and causes an uproar when he speaks his mind and enthralls fellow teens.
a gritty film portraying rebellion and alienation; it demonstrates the necessity of rising above to establish your own voice and doing so in a jumping and screaming manner. A poignant film in the age of disillusionment, with the cost of living on the rise, frustrations boiling, this film is the outlet for our collective pain.

Nearing the end of the Radio Film Festival, we have chosen The Vast of Night
A 2019 American science fiction mystery film, it depicts Two Kids caught up in the dawn of the space-race, these radio-obsessed teens discover a strange frequency over the airwaves in what becomes the most important night of their lives and in the history of their small town.

Our finale of the Radio Film Festival we have chosen A Prairie Home Companion
A look at what goes on backstage during the last broadcast of America’s most celebrated radio show, where singing cowboys Dusty and Lefty, a country music siren, and a host of others hold court.
