NAIDOC WEEK from 8-15 November

NAIDOC About Naidoc Week – Naidoc celebrations are held across Australia to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities, but by Australians from all walks of life. The week is a great opportunity to participate in a range of activities and to support your local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community. NAIDOC originally stood for ‘National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee’. This committee was once responsible for organising national activities during NAIDOC Week and its acronym has since become the name of the week itself. This year’s theme is Always Was, Always Will Be, recognising that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years. SOURCE:

NAIDOC Week Film Festival Line Up:

In My Own Words – 11 November 7pm AEDT
Raw, heartfelt, sometimes painstaking but often funny, In My Own Words follows the journey of adult Aboriginal students and their teachers as they discover the transformative power of reading and writing for the first time in their lives. In My Own Words is an uplifting documentary on the work of the Literacy for Life Foundation, directed by award-winning filmmaker Erica Glynn.

The Song Keepers – 12 November 7pm AEDT
Ancient German hymns find new life in Australian outback. Naina Sen’s joyful, compassionate film about an Aboriginal women’s choir shows the complex, unexpected consequences of colonisation.

The Flood – 13 November 7pm AEDT
Set during WWII this sumptuously filmed revisionist western is an explosive blend of Tarantino and The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith. This is the story of Jarah’s coming-of-age in a brutal, and lawless land – growing from a sweet child to a strong, independent and ferocious woman taking on Australia’s corrupt and bigoted system one bad guy at a time. In the best tradition of the gunslinging outlaw, when the enigmatic Jarah is pushed to the limit she explodes in a fury of retribution. But for a revenge western there is a surprising series of twists and turns. This is Victoria Wharfe McIntyre’s feature film debut that is a creative development of the elegant and powerful multi-award winning long short, Miro that was a hit at Vision Splendid two years ago. Vision Splendid Film Festival 2020

Wik Vs Queensland – 14 November 7pm AEDT
Tells a very personal story of justice and struggle, with unique access to the key players of that moment in history, and never-before seen footage of the two (then) young lawyers, Noel Pearson and Marcia Langton.”

Westwind: Djalu’s Legacy – 15 November 7pm AEDT
Didgeridoo master, keeper of an ancient dreaming, tribal elder: Djalu must pass on his sacred songlines. Are his sons ready? #Djalu seeks a way forward – inspiring a custodian for the next generation by taking his music to the world. #Westwind: Djalu’s Legacy is an enlightening and powerful film which profiles internationally revered musician, craftsman and spiritual leader #DjaluGurriwiwi. As an important custodian of aboriginal culture, Djalu and his community must find a new voice and leader to carry their songlines and traditions through future generations. The film follows Djalu and his son on an important journey which features musician Gotye and artist Ghostpatrol to keep this culture alive.
