Sydney’s obsession with all things “market” is on the rise – whether you’re doing your weekly shopping at the local Farmer’s Market or you’re eating large at the Night Noodle Markets – our apparent addiction with stall-browsing is at an all time peak. One ‘out of the box’ organiser has taken the concept of market and adapted that to create a completely unique experience – known in the Inner West as Locally Made.
Sam Ali from COMMUNE created locally made in 2014. Deciding to focus on the makers – artisans, artists and academics – Sam decided to collaborate with those ‘less available’, avoiding any of the mass produced ‘regular’ items seen at every market across Sydney.
The next instalment of Locally Made will take place at the COMMUNE’s creative precinct at 901 Bourke Street, Waterloo from 10am to 5pm on 4 December 2016. With a focus on Christmas shopping – Locally Made will showcase up to 60 makers, musicians, food stalls and interactive workshops. Entry is by gold coin donation.
“Many of the makers we have don’t even have a website – they’re just starting out. I wanted to offer a platform for them to reach consumers as I’ve seen their products, and they’re fantastic. This way you can guarantee you’re getting that ‘one of a kind’ item – and our makers are able to reach people they wouldn’t be able to on their own. It’s a win-win for the Inner West.” – Sam Ali.
The Market will feature 5 distinct areas, offering enough entertainment for an entire day out. The food and beverage section will offer Sydney’s finest bites, the Street Busking Stage will include a DJ set by The Delta Riggs. The fashion room features unique designs from local fashion designers and makers and the flea market will feature jewellery, small batch products and home wares. Finally, the Yoga Room will feature a very special kids and parents yoga class.

COMMUNE Locally Made is a boutique market focusing on Sydney’s Inner West makers in the fields of hand-made artisan crafts, design, music, art, fashion, food and beverage. The project is aimed primarily to support established and emerging local businesses whom are often showcasing their product for the first time. The markets are a chance for makers and their customers to engage one-on-one for a more enriching buying experience, an appreciation of the craft and direct feedback.
