Art helps us make sense of our rapidly changing world. Artists stimulate ideas, open conversations, connect us, and help us heal. In this unsettling time, we are delighted to welcome visitors back to the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia from Tuesday 16 June.
We are very pleased to reopen with the 22nd Biennale of Sydney: NIRIN, for an extended period, so more visitors can experience Artistic Director Brook Andrew’s extraordinary Biennale. We know many people have been enjoying the digital programs that the MCA and the Biennale put online while the Museum has been closed, and now they will have a chance to see it for real. However, there will be a change to the Museum opening hours: Tuesdays to Sundays, 10am – 5pm (closed Mondays).
The safety of our visitors, artists, staff and volunteers is vital. We will reopen with enhanced health, hygiene and safety measures in place, following strict NSW Government guidelines, based on expert public health advice. These include limiting visitor numbers to allow for 4 square metres per person; enhanced cleaning regimes, ensuring adequate hand-washing facilities and sanitiser; and providing distance markers for queuing to help keep our community safe.
While we have been closed, the MCA team brought our community Your MCA online programs to keep them connected to contemporary art and each other. Many of these online programs will continue. Our public programs, including GENEXT and ARTBAR, will remain online for now, as will our access and learning programs; the National Centre for Creative Learning will remain closed for the time being.
The MCA Store, MCA Cafe and Sculpture Terrace will also reopen on Tuesday 16 June. Graze restaurant will reopen on 30 June. All spaces will have capacity restrictions due to physical distancing requirements.
We hope to see you soon and look forward to the Museum, once again, being a place of solace and calm for our communities, offering them the space to reflect on the changed world we find ourselves in today.
