This week we chat to Paul Kildea, Artistic Director of Musica Viva Australia about their 2024 season of chamber music. After several disrupted years he is looking forward to capacity crowds and predictable programming again.
2024 will see seven national tours featuring twenty-six of the world’s best artists including The Choir of King’s College Cambridge, William Barton, Finnish violinist Pekka Kuusisto, powerhouse pianist Kirill Gerstein.
The season begins with the songs of William Bolcom in a cabaret setting. Then didjeridu virtuoso William Barton joins Ensemble Q performing his new composition as well as Brahms, Ligeti and Paul Dean. German based Esme Quartet play much-loved works by Mendelssohn and Debussy.
And crowd favourite The Choir of King’s College, Cambridge return to our shores with a program of traditional and contemporary choral works.
Violinist Pekka Kuusisto joins Gabriel Kahane, a composer, singer and multi-instrumentalist in a program that includes Traditional Scandinavian folk music.
On the Bondi Sea Wall we meet Matthew Brettschneider aka Melnunnie Art. As Matthew tells us melnunnie means red in his traditional language. He is a wiradjuri man who grew up on the Lachlan River. We can see the river in his mural which reflects his love and knowledge of country. Like a lot of indigenous mural artists he uses traditional techniques giving it a contemporary twist. His music choice by The Warumpi Band also reflects the wiradjuri country.
On December 2 he is part of a fascinating evening at Ambush Gallery in Waterloo called MOSS Deck Art Show. Invited artists paint blank skateboard decks for charity with money raised providing life-changing permanent water schemes in southern east Africa.
