“From NOLA To Chicago,” the new album from Sugar Bowl Hokum is Eastside Radio’s album of the week.
Enamoured with obscure jazz and blues from the 20s and 30s, the band take compostions from the era and bring them back to life with fresh Sugar Bowl updates. Fans of those decades may recognise arrangements from Merline Johnson, Barrel House Annie, Rosetta Howard and Ma Rainey.
Lynsey Mackay and Nikki Steinfeld are on vocals, Tanya Maree on trumpet, Michael Meissner on guitar and the rhythm section consits PK on double bass and Tim O’Driscoll on drums.
Taking in blues, swing, jazz and hokum, the band move through the classic blues of Bessie Smith to the R&B of Ruth Brown to the ragtime of Blind Blake and Blind Boy Fuller, the Hokum of Bo Carter, the gritty songwriting of Memphis Minnie.
