Paradise on Earth & cards celebrating contemporary attitudes

Arts Thursday 4 February 2021

Join Maisy Stapleton and Paula Towers this Arts Thursday to meet two very special gusts.

Dr Anne Watson

Dr Anne Watson

Anne is the Curator of an exhibition at the Museum of Sydney exploring aspects of the life of Marion Mahony Griffin, in particular her relationship with Castlecrag in Sydney.

Marion Griffin’s life is often overshadowed by that of her husband – Walter Burley Griffin. But as the first female licenced architect and as the ‘translator’ into exquisite renderings of the architectural works of both Griffin and Frank Lloyd Wright, that did much to promote their architecture, she doubtless contributed much to their ideas as well,

When the Griffins won the competition to design the new capitol of Canberra and came to live in Australia, Marion, in many ways, came into her own.

The new exhibition Paradise on Earth, at the Museum of Sydney, explores Marion Mahoney Griffin’s life, her talents, her partnership with her husband and in particular, her influence on the development of a unique community and environment at Castlecrag.

Marion Griffin has been an enigma and we look forward to speaking with Dr Anne Watson and to unravelling some of the threads of Marion’s life.

Anne is a former Curator at the Powerhouse Museum and has written widely on architecture and design.

What a card: Chris Stone

Chris Stone

Chris Stone is renowned for his creative array of cards – including funny, bling, and a Covid collection as well as those celebrating all major festivities.

After studying textile design at the Royal College of Art in London, he worked for American designer, Ken Scott, in Milan, Italy before joining Sheridan in Australia. As Design Director, he shaped the domestic brand into an international collection, selling in 52 countries across the globe. Chris also worked closely with artists and designers to promote the ‘Australian look’, and many of his designs were seen in TV series and films, such as Muriel’s Wedding.

In addition, Chris is a sought-after lecturer, having taught textiles at university to fashion designers from 1989 until now. Painting canvasses became a calling in 1995, and his many sold-out exhibitions have featured colourful flowers. Today he continues this interest at his Rose Bay studio.
