Hot on the heels of their new album, Paris Combo return to Sydney for only their second visit in 15 years to serve up their unique blend of gypsy jazz, French chanson and Latin rhythm, with a touch of Middle Eastern groove at City Recital Hall on Saturday 18 March.
Six albums and two decades spent criss-crossing the globe, playing to enthusiastic audiences from Sydney to San Francisco and Berlin to Beijing, have enabled Paris Combo to create its own unique world, establishing itself as one of the most piquant, intriguing groups on the international music scene. As cosmopolitan and sophisticated as the city from which they hail, Paris Combo have garnered critical acclaim and an immense following worldwide. Formed in Paris in the early 1990s, the group honed their eclectic sound performing in cafes and barges along the Seine. With charismatic chanteuse Belle du Berry leading the line-up of Australian trumpeter/keyboardist David Lewis, bassist Benoit Dunoyer de Segonzac, drummer/vocalist François Jeannin and guitarist Potzi, Paris Combo are one the most intriguing groups on the international music scene today. Seattle Times calls Paris Combo, “My favorite French cultural export of the past decade.”.
After winning a legion of fans at their 2015 concert at City Recital Hall, the band are thrilled to be back in Australia to perform their favourite songs as well as tracks from their new album, Tako Tsubo. Their enigmatically titled new release leads us through a varied collection of musical atmospheres, ranging from the intimacy of the live combo to more lush orchestral settings and beautiful 60s retro à la Bacharach with psychedelic overtones. As always, a mélange of musical influences underpin the infectious, toe-tapping grooves and mischievous vocals, which have become their hallmark. The new album reinforces and expands Paris Combo’s rich musical palette and will build on their already considerable global attention.
Belle du Berry explains the lyrical leitmotif of this new album – suggested by the song titles, ‘Mon Anatomie’, ‘Specimen’, ‘Anémiques Maracas’, ‘ID d’Heidi’ and ‘Profil’ – is the human physique and the way emotional and physical beings interact with each other. “Tako Tsubo, the title track, is inspired by a rare condition known also as “broken-heart syndrome”. But don’t worry, Paris Combo have the cure and we are delighted to be back in Australia. We look forward to sharing the new songs with Australian audiences, as well as the old favourites of course,” said Belle du Berry. With her playful lyrics and sparkling vocals, Belle will steal your heart.
