Paul Cutlan’s String Project will present material from their highly acclaimed album Across the Top, alongside new material featuring special guest Gary Daley on piano. Across the Top is an extended suite inspired by Cutlan’s experiences travelling through the Kimberley region of North-West Australia. The music draws together many styles close to Paul’s heart, including 20th century classical music, jazz improvisation and dance rhythms from the Balkans and South America. The resulting work is almost cinematic, evoking the imagery of mineral-rich red landscapes, vast plains, imposing ancient ranges, lush gorges and rivers.
In recent years, Paul has performed with acts as varied as Lou Reed, Gurrumul and Ólafur Arnalds. His career has included many performances in Europe, North America and Asia.
For these concerts, bass clarinettist Paul Cutlan joins five of Australia’s finest improvising string players: Brett Hirst (bass), Oliver Miller (cello), Veronique Serret (violin), Inge Courtney-Haentjes (viola) and Liisa Pallandi (violin).
Across the Top has been praised by many. John Shand writing in the Sydney Morning Herald wrote “Cutlan’s works are refreshingly original and exude vitality… the composing and improving are of equal merit – some achievement for such an ambitious, genre-defying project”. John Hardaker writing in australianjazz.net called Across the Top “a work that is entirely of its own world, taking much that is good from a range of genres and influences”.
