Nadje Noordhuis is a trumpeter, flugel horn player and educator. In this profile we hear her describing how she started playing music at a very early age but was introduced to jazz much later. Her ears were opened to the music by the legendary Kenny Wheeler. Moving from Australia to New York she talks about the challenges of making her way in the jazz scene in NYC. And her search for female role models. She also talks about the advice she gives to the young female musicians she teaches .
Before we hear she speaks, we hear a track of her music , Le Fin, from her 2012 album called simply Nadje Noordhuis. At the end of the profile we hear another track from that album titled Magnolia. All the music being played through the profile is also from that album
The profile was produced by Mick Paddon, from an interview with Najde at the 2021 Sydney Conservatorium Jazz Festival. It was first broadcast on the 8th July 2021 on his weekly radio show on Eastside , Time and Space, which airs from 12 midday to 14.00.
This podcast is the most recent in a series called Changing the Face of Jazz. Mick has been producing these profiles of female jazz instrumentalists who have come to prominence in recent years, as a follow on to his radio documentary, Music Has No Gender. They are musicians who are changing the way we see jazz, even if not the way we hear the music
