Mum, Me and the IED , Depot Theatre, Marrickville, Aug.15-Sept. 1
The play is about a traumatised medic, Rob Harrison, returning from service in Afghanistan. He is suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, PTSD, as a result of what he witnessed, patching up his colleagues and the local village victims including children. The horrors of the injuries inflicted by improvised explosive devices haunt him relentlessly and he is not able to expunge them .
The production is outstanding and there are dramatic and mesmerising moments. The cast give a superb performance, in particular Philippe Klaus playing the deeply troubled Rob Harrison and Elaine Hudson his despairing anti war mother.
It is a dark and troubling subject but there are wry moments providing some light relief. But the psychological toll that war takes on its participants is starkly driven home.
The play is written by James Balian and Roger Vickery and directed by Kevin Jackson.
