SIMA’s Jazz:NOW Zela Margossian Trio

Jazz:NOW has rebooted to connect artists and audiences at a time when it’s most needed. Watch seven intimate performances with bonus vintage footage from iconic Australian artists in this exclusive digital season.

Zela Margossian is joined by long time, multicultural collaborators to create an exotic, global musical journey. Her rich textures, tumbling polyrhythms and use of traditional Armenian melodies have been described by Downbeat as “entrancing and dazzlingly unique”.

Born in Beirut, classically trained Zela developed a passion for ethnojazz during her time studying in Armenia. Upon moving to Australia she began combining classical virtuosity, jazz-based improvisation, and the complex rhythmic and melodic flavours of her heritage.

A nuanced take on Armenian musical tradition voiced through the lens of jazz trio.
