This Arts Thursday, 12 December 2019, with Maisy Stapleton, reveals art in context of place and culture.
The first interview focusses on the exhibition Southern Swell at Hazelhurst Arts Centre at Gymea.
Curator Carrie Kibbler speaks about the background to the exhibition, the history of surfing in the Sutherland Shire and the development of board riding, much of which took place in the surf off Cronulla Beach.
This is a great summer exhibition – colourful, joyous and connecting with Australian popular history through the photography, art and mementos of beach culture and surfing.
In the second interview, the focus is on the poetically titled My Love is an Island Far Away at the Mosman Art Gallery. This is a major solo exhibition by the internationally acclaimed visual artist Jumaadi, who was born in East Java, Indonesia and who currently lives and works between Yogyakarta, Indonesia and Mosman, Australia.
Assistant Director and Senior Curator Katrina Cashman joins Jumaadi, to speak about the exhibition concept –the internment of Javanese political detainees in the 1920s.
Following their exile in the Dutch penal colony of Digul, Western Papua the detainees were eventually stationed in Cowra, in Central Western New South Wales at the request of the Dutch colonists during the Second World War (1943 – 1944).
Jumadi’s perceptive interpretation of this history coupled with his unique and often playful vision, gives insight into a joint history of Indonesia and Australia that few are aware of.
