Building on the outstanding success of the 2015 event, this year’s Sydney International Women’s Jazz Festival presents a remarkably diverse roster of established stars on the international jazz scene alongside a lineup of exceptionally talented local artists in a dynamic program of ticketed and free events.
The festival was created in 2012 with support of the City of Sydney and SIMA. The aim was to establish an annual international jazz festival with the focus on Women in the Jazz scene to enthuse audiences and elevate Sydney as a major international city of music and culture.
Now in its fifth year, the Sydney International Women’s Jazz Festival brings together an electrifying range of musicians and composers from Australia and beyond.
The line-up is made of extraordinarily gifted artists and includes Melissa Aldana Trio (Chile/USA), Ingrid and Christine Jensen (Canada/USA) with the Mike Nock Trio, Tricia Evy (France), Tara Tiba (Iran), Shannon Barnett Quartet(Germany/AUS), Gian Slater, Barney McAll & Simon Barker Trio, That Red Head (Lozz Benson), Queen Porter Stomp, Microfiche and Hieronymus Trio, plus Sorcha Albuquerque Trio, Crossover and Pheno at the Band Festival Night.
Besides these artists the only for the festival formed Sydney Women’s Jazz Collective will be featured with a collection of specially commissioned pieces by established and rising Australian jazz composers.
The program will not only comprise the artist’s gigs at established live music venues like the Foundry 616 or Venue 505 but also helds free events like Jazz at the Powerhouse offering activities including: weekend screenings of the documentary The Girls in The Band, a curator’s tour of the some of the Powerhouse’s remarkable instruments and a performance by the Young Women’s Jazz Orchestra.
