THIS CULTURAL LIFE – Arts Thursday

17 February 2022

This Arts Thursday program, with Maisy Stapleton and Paula Towers, is packed with interviews.

First, we explore a recently published book celebrating the badass ‘sheroes’ we were never taught about in school.

In Sheilas: Badass Women of Australian History, author Eliza Reilly revives forgotten stories including Indigenous bushranger Mary Ann Bugg breaking her husband Captain Thunderbolt out of gaol and Nancy Wake infiltrating Nazi strongholds by bike.

Eliza Reilly is a writer, director and performer who co-hosted Girls Gone Mild on FBI in Sydney for 5 years and her writing has been featured on ABC’s Radio National, at the Sydney Comedy Festival, the Sydney Writers Festival and on ABC TV’s The Checkout.

Then Maisy interviews Zoe Reynolds, photo journalist, artist and climate change advocate.

Zoe’s forthcoming Exhibition Black Summer opens on 3 March and runs till 10 March at Gallery East in Clovelly. Black Summer depicts the aftermath of bushfires on Kangaroo Island, South Australia and the devastation brought to landscapes and living creatures alike.

These are painted photographs, mostly representing the recent devastation of the bushfires on Kangaroo Island. But they are also hopeful images.

North by Northwest opens at Sydney’s Lyric Theatre for a limited season on March 9. Following sell-out seasons in Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane, the UK and Toronto, this is the first time Sydney audiences can experience the stage adaptation of Alfred Hitchcock’s workDavid Campbell returns to the stage in the role of Roger O. Thornhill, the role made famous by Cary Grant in the 1959 classic film, joined by the cast including Amber McMahon, Bert La Bontè and Genevieve Lemon.

Joining us on the program will be Associate Director Jess Burns. Starting as the original stage manager, Burns has been with the show since 2015 then was promoted to Artistic Director. She has worked on the production in Melbourne, Bath (UK), Toronto, Brisbane, Adelaide and now in Sydney.
