Yasmin & Fanous joined Arts’ Dr Margaux Dombkins for a live performance. These talented performers are participating in the New Beginnings: Refugee Arts & Culture Festival , which celebrates the talents, skills and cultural diversity of people from refugee backgrounds. Yasmin Ibrahim Mohamed, a singer-songwriter who was born in Sudan, performs African music, blending traditional songs and improvisation with modern styles. Yasmin & Fanous includes Australian and African musicians: Michael Coggins (guitar), Yannick Kofi (bass), and Jasper Sarkodee (drums).
The Festival line up will feature live music, dance performances and workshops from artists who draw inspiration from the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and Australia. The cultural performers showcase diverse cultural expressions from new and emerging communities with the aim of enriching intercultural understanding and engagement in the broader community.
The New Beginnings Festival 2016 is an initiative of Settlement Services International (SSI), a community-based, not-for-profit humanitarian organisation committed to ensuring that refugees are supported to fulfill their potential as members of the Australian community.
