SIMA’s Award-Winning Music Program Back For 2022
Jazz is about communication, expression, and speaking freely through your instrument. The widespread genre is one that’s evolved more than most because new changes are supported and encouraged rather than ridiculed. Yet, female representation in the jazz realm is lacking – women represent one-fifth of singer songwriters registered with APRA, even though they make up almost half of the qualified musicians and individuals studying music. From this idea, the Young Women’s Jazz Workshops were developed.
As the winner of the APRA Art Music Award for Excellence in Education, the workshops have played a transformative role for countless musicians aged 12 and up around Australia. The eight-week program accommodates players of all skill levels, from beginner to advanced, regardless of their prior knowledge of jazz, and has been crafted to inspire young instrumentalists to play jazz and pursue a future in music.
The workshops have several aims to shape the young women who participate:
DEVELOP the skills and confidence of young women in jazz and improvised instrumental music.
BROADEN knowledge of jazz and improvised music.
INCREASE awareness of career options in jazz and related areas.
ENCOURAGE students to understand audition processes and apply for tertiary jazz courses.
NURTURE and foster friendships, ensembles, and support networks among female jazz musicians.
Alumni such as internationally renowned pianist Zela Margossian, Emma Stephenson, Ellen Kirkwood, Jodie Michael, and countless others, can vouch for the generosity, encouragement and knowledge they received while participating in the program.
Auditions for the workshops are being held on Saturday June 25th, at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. The program then runs from July 23rd to September 17th, every Saturday from 10am-1pm.
